Wydo (New Business Development)
The Innovation Turbo

Wydo believes in sustainable innovations. In smart, ground-breaking or just surprisingly simple ideas that can lead to valuable solutions. From a wide range of expertise in the fields of biochemistry, polymer, analytical and organic chemistry and microbiology, Wydo helps entrepreneurs develop a good idea into a promising, sustainable innovation.

How? By bringing people, resources and expertise together. We put together an R&D team with relevant disciplines, have innovative laboratory facilities, seek cooperation with knowledge institutes and/or establish contacts with subsidy providers.

SolidLux UV Coating
Instant coatings

In 2012, an employee of paint manufacturer Royal Van Wijhe Verf suddenly asked himself while sitting in the dentist’s chair: could UV light also be used for the instant curing of opaque floor coatings? It works for fillings and also for certain car paints. A floor coating based on this principle would be a godsend for situations where there is 24/7 activity. Due to the drying time of traditional coatings, floor maintenance here often involves a lot of inconvenience and high costs for emergency provisions.
Three years later, SolidLux UV Coating was born. An opaque floor coating without water that does not dry in the air but cures immediately under UV light. The process from idea to introduction was fully guided by Wydo, who provided the knowledge, cooperation partners, subsidies and R&D facilities.

Veolia Polymers, Dijkstra Plastics, Royal Van Wijhe Verf
100% PCR paint buckets

A 10-litre bucket of wall paint easily weighs 15 kilos. High-quality plastics are therefore used for this packaging. Necessary, but not ideal from a sustainability point of view: the buckets are therefore not or hardly suitable for recycling. Reason enough for Royal Van Wijhe Verf to start an innovation project together with Veolia Polymers and Ontwikkelingsmaatschappij (Development Company) Oost. The aim: to produce a paint bucket from post-consumer recycled polypropylene (PCR), which comes from households. The paint manufacturer’s wall paint bucket supplier also got on board; Dijkstra Plastics already had experience with post-industrial recyclate, but consumer plastics were a new challenge. The joint expertise and know-how of the parties involved resulted in a successful innovation in 2019: a rock-solid plastic bucket with a lid made from 100% post-consumer recyclate.

Sting Additives
Additives for coating applications

Water-soluble coatings are susceptible to bacterial growth. Wydo has initiated research to extend the shelf life of these types of paints in a way that is less harmful to the environment. This research project has now led to a spin-off from Wydo, which develops surfactants under the name Sting Additives. Sting Additives helps manufacturers with tailor-made solutions to reduce or replace biocides in products. This enables manufacturers to meet stricter environmental targets.

Bambooder
Biobased fibre

Bamboo is fast-growing, super-strong, lightweight, renewable, available worldwide and, on top of that, absorbs a lot of CO2. It is therefore logical that bamboo is in great demand as a possible alternative to fossil raw materials. However, a major challenge proved to be the fusion. With this dilemma, the quirky start-up company Bambooder came to Wydo. The solution was found in the technique of UV-curable coatings. In collaboration with the University of Leuven, among others, this led to a patented process that is now being evaluated and scaled-up.
Today, Bambooder delivers high-quality composites for a large number of market segments: from aerospace to automotive and from sports to energy and construction.
A sustainability-driven innovation that does not match the quality of traditional products but surpasses them by a wide margin.
